Neuro Emotional technique (NET)

What is NET?

Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) is a technique trained practitioners can use to help their patients process and release stress related issues in both the mind and body.

NET can help to identify thoughts and internal dialog associated with recollection, identify the emotions that the recollection bring out and how the recollection affects behaviours in everyday life.

NET is a non-invasive technique where manual muscle testing is used to gauge autonomic (fight-or-flight) helping to identify involuntary physiological responses. Once a response is identified the patient is asked to keep the event identified in their mind as they hold specific pulse points and/or emotional points while engaging in a simple breathing process. The process repeated until any self limiting emotions connected to the recollection is resolved.

To get the most out of your NET experience, your practitioner will adapt a ‘home run formula’ which considers the four big stressors in our lives Emotional, Structural, Biochemistry, and Toxins.

As a naturopath I can help improve these four stressors by addressing diet and lifestyle and where needed I can refer you to some amazing practitioners such as chiropractors, osteopaths, Pilates instructors, counsellors or another modality that best suits your situation.

So whats the science behind it? A small study by Monti et al (2018) assessing the neurophysiology (behavioural changes that follow neurological trauma or conditions) and autonomic (fight-or-fight) effects of NET in cancer patients concluded that a short course (3-5 sessions) of NET significantly reduces the reactivity in the autonomic nervous system. By reducing the reactivity to traumatic memories the distress associated with recollection was also reduced leading to improved emotional self regulation.

Who could benefit from NET? Well, pretty much anyone! If you have a known stress that affects your everyday life for example a car accident occurred in your past that causes anxiety every time you drive in the rain or at night, or that super high slide you went on as a child that caused you to have a fear of heights. But it doesn’t have to be something extreme and traumatic. It could be as simple as wanting to deal with your negative relationship with money that you unknowingly picked up as a young child while your parents were going through a rough time.

What could you be holding onto that isn’t allowing you to move forward?
